The starting scene of the film is the demonstration of the childhood of Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl. As time went by and 1937, Thor Heyerdahl became an ethnographer working in geography and zoölogy. The woman he married is Liv (Agnes Kittselsen). Together with his wife, Thor realizes that stone processing models, culture, and language use are similar to life in Peru, known in one of the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia. He developed his theory after the islanders insistently said that their ancestors came from the East from the older ones. According to this theory, his ancestors crossed the ocean in pre-Columbian times and came to Peru.

For ten years, Thor works to prove the truth of this theory. When he thinks that his theory is mature enough, he goes to New York to get it confirmed. The officials here see it as impossible to build ships strong enough to advance on the ocean in the 1500s. For this reason, they cannot see Thor's theory as realistic and correct. Thor also goes to the American National Geographic Society as the last hope. However, he also receives a rejection answer.

To prove his theory, Thor Heyerdahl decides to form a team by building his boat. He leaves his children and wife in Norway. He cannot find a sponsor for the expenses he will make. He also has a hard time finding a team to work with, as he cannot reach enough financial strength. Herman Watzinger, a fridge vendor and bored with his life, overhears the conversations while talking to the sailors. He says he wants to join Thor's team. After the time spent with difficulties, balsa logs are made without using any technological technique. Kon-Tiki is about making the journey taken with this raft and making it a documentary.
