In the first half of the 20th century, the RMS Titanic ship was built as the product of intense competition between rival shipping lines. In particular, the White Star Line found itself in a battle for steamboat supremacy with the venerable British firm Cunard, who owned two ships that were among the most sophisticated luxuries of its time. As a result of this battle for supremacy, the company started working on producing an unsinkable ship named Titanic.

Introducing Titanic

When the calendars showed May 31, 1911, the Titanic's massive hull was slid down the sleds and lowered into the Lagan River in Belfast. The famous ship's hull featured at that time the world's largest moving man-made object. More than 100,000 people attended the launch of the ship, which took over a minute and set off . None of the participants would have expected the Titanic to be the sunken ship. The hull on the river was moved to the assembly pier. Two main steam engines and 29 giant boilers were installed. Passenger selection was made as befits the first transatlantic crossing of the world's most famous ship. Most of the guests; high-ranking officials, wealthy industrialists, dignitaries, and celebrities. most notable of the passengers was J. Bruce Ismay, the managing director of the White Star Line, along with shipbuilder Thomas Andrews from Harland and Wolff.

First and the Last Journey

Titanic was thrilled when it made its maiden voyage from Southampton, England on April 10, 1912. After stopping in Cherbourg, France, and Ireland, the ship sailed to New York with 2,240 passengers. Jack Phillips and Harold Bride, who were on duty as wireless radio operators on Titanic for most of the journey, were receiving iceberg alerts. On the evening of April 14, the Titanic began to approach an area known to have icebergs. Captain Smith changed the ship's course a little further south. Yet, the ship maintained a speed of about 22 knots. At approximately 21.40, Mesaba sent an ice field alert. The message was never delivered to Titanic's bridge.
