Yawkyawk
Yawkyawk is a female creature that originated in the mythology of the Kunwinjku people in the Northern Territory of Australia, Western Arnhem. Kunwinjku people are right living in a place that is on the north side of aborigines. Six different dialects are spoken here. There are many different epics and mythological stories in these dialects. They are often referred to as a source of sea monsters. Information about Yawkyawk is also detailed by these people.
Who is Yawkyawk?
Yawkyawk, also known as ngal-kunburriyaymi. The use of this name is also due to the dialect difference. The same sea monster spirit is called yawkyawk in some regions, and ngal-kunburriyaymi in some places. In other words, these two terms refer to the same creature.
Looking at the Yawkyawk, it seems to be in the typical mermaid class. It is exactly a creature similar to a mermaid. However, unlike the mermaid, its feathers are dense. There is also seaweed in these feathers. According to the belief of the Aboriginal people, the seaweed that floats to the surface of the water comes from the head of a Yawkyawk. This belief has been prevalent in the region for a long time. The same thing is said whenever moss is seen bypassing from father to children. For this reason, the existence of Yawkyawk is never forgotten.
What Powers Does Yawkyawk Have?
The normal form of this creature has the upper body of a humanoid female and the lower part of a fish. However, this sea monster can change shape at will. Preferred forms include a crocodile, dragonfly, snake, or swordfish. Since it can take any shape they want, each person describes it differently.
Another strength Yawkyawk is believed to have is to bring nourishing rain. It is even possible to send a storm to those who annoy him. In other words, he can manipulate the air like a goddess. He can send the natural event he wants to the people he wants. This feature has earned him the title of monstrosity. People try not to do various bad deeds by being afraid of him.
Some people claim to be daughters and/or female counterparts (and hence wives) of the Rainbow Serpent Creator god Ngalyod, with the abilities these souls possess. That is, they say that powerful beings like yawkyawk derive their power from other Gods. According to beliefs, the source of every power can be a different God.
